Our response to single-use plastic…

At Elgin Dental Care, we take the impact we have on the environment as seriously as we do our hygiene and infection control standards.

For patient safety to be paramount, many of the materials we use are unfortunately limited to a single use. Indeed, unless an item is approved for sterilisation in an auto-clave, it cannot be reused and this is why plastic is so important in our line of work. The disposal of this clinical waste is unsurprisingly subject to stringent controls too.

You will be pleased to know that for some time we have been actively looking at viable alternatives to plastic, where this is appropriate. In the first instance, this search has been more successful in some areas (eg plastic cups, plastic dapen dishes, plastic trays) than others (eg aspiration tips, polishing brushes, syringes), but suppliers are starting to respond well to increased media attention and demand.

Please be assured that we are committed to sourcing alternatives from new, environmentally responsible suppliers and will introduce replacement consumables and reduce the use of plastic as soon as we are able over the next 6 months or so.

Please bear with us – change is coming!
